Few retail businesses in Niagara Region used to tell me that “you have a wife” when I used to go to talk to the management and to apply for work when I lived in Niagara Region before moving to Hamilton. I found that very strange and perplexing because there was no relevance to applying for work and my personal life. I used to look at them instead of asking how did they know about my wife (I guess spying and data collection at best). I live without any woman (could be mother, sister, wife. daughter) since 2005, i.e. lived without a wife. Does it mean that married people in Canada with a wife are not expected to work or not allowed to work. A big question in my mind. Or perhaps they were discouraging me from work by saying “you have a wife” and wanted me to get involved with some criminal activities to obtain money.
I had a very different concept (or view) of a wife when I got married in Karachi. When people have wife and children they have more responsibility and are given opportunity to support family and are given preference (as I experienced in my previous life). But concept/role of a wife here in Canada seems to be very different than what I saw in my family before coming to Canada because of such a meaning less statement (“you have a wife”). Not sure wether these people mentioned above were reminding me of something or giving me information about something unknown to me, or perhaps it was question in the form of a statement, to find out if they could use my wife (comparable to asking for a Dollar or a cigarette, i.e. you have a dollar. you have a cigarette/light and you have coffee etc.).
Something to think about.
